Curated by Dr. Bahar Çınarlı for the Turkish-Canadian Society, the 2nd Annual Women’s Art on Women’s Day exhibition is a celebration of the diverse talents and perspectives of female artists. This exhibition serves as a testament to the vibrancy of creativity and the unique viewpoints that women bring to the forefront of the art world. Dr. Bahar Çınarlı, Curator

Bahar Çınarlı was born in Ankara Türkiye in 1962. She pursued a career successfully in science and became a Medical Doctor. After moving to Vancouver, Canada in 1988, she studied at UBC and was awarded the M.Sc. and CCFP degrees. She had several publications in distinguished scientific journals such as Nature Biotechnology. After achieving accreditation as a Canadian Medical Doctor, Bahar has practiced medicine in Vancouver for 2 1/2 decades. Bahar was exposed to literature, visual and performance arts from very early ages by, among notable others, her father Mehmet Çınarlı, poet, editor of a highly esteemed literary journal, and a Constitutional Court Judge in Türkiye.

Bahar has always pursued her interest in the arts, including writing, photography, painting, film-making and theatre. Artistic expression has been an interest from childhood. At 10 years of age, Bahar staged plays recruiting neighborhood children to play various roles. During her high-school years, she won poetry and painting competitions. While in Medical School, Bahar created a good number of oil paintings and pursued acting roles in community theatre.

In 1991, during her graduate studies at UBC, Bahar held her first solo photography exhibition at a -now closed- art gallery in downtown Vancouver. In 2002 Bahar was selected to participate in a group exhibition at the prestigious Romanov Gallery in downtown Vancouver.

In 2006 she became the Vancouver correspondent for the trilingual newspaper Notre Anatolie, published in Montreal, and covered a plethora of events with her articles and photographs.

In 2007 she released her documentary film “The Land of Exodus and Beauty” – a film about the Greek -Turkish population exchange. The film was screened at the Pacific Cinematheque. It was also selected as a finalist in Montreal Turkish Film Festival, and later screened in Montreal. Several universities throughout the U.S.A. and Canada have acquired the film and made it available to their patrons.

In 2007, Bahar was one of the organizers and participants of the celebrated “Turkish Poetry Readings with Live Music Day” event in Vancouver. The video recording of the event is available on the internet.

In 2009 she was elected “Journalist of the year” by the Notre Anatolie newspaper. She later became a columnist at the same newspaper, writing about various topics. In 2020 the paper created the “Through-Bahar’s-Lens” section, where she published numerous photographic artwork.

In 2023 Bahar participated in the “Women’s Art on Women’s Day” exhibition produced by the TCS with an acrylic painting.

During the last 3 years Bahar has been living half the year in the Turkish Mediterranean and she has predominantly focused on photography. She also has started sculpting.

Artists

Dilek Cansın, Artist

Born and raised in Izmir, Türkiye, Dilek Cansin moved to Vancouver in 1984 to complete her Master’s Degree in Language Education at UBC. Years later, when she started taking pottery classes, she fell in love with the medium, enjoyed experimenting with all kinds of glazes and hand-building techniques, and shared her passion for pottery with her family and friends. Among her interests are the arts, writing, music, languages, cooking,  outdoor recreation, travel, and photography.  As a member of Aberthau Potters, she has participated in their bi-annual pottery shows since 2015, as well as in an art show at InspireHealth in 2018 and two public participations at VisualSpace Gallery in Vancouver.  

Alev Ermiş Mavitan, Artist

Born in 1957. Graduated from Boğaziçi University O.L.Y.O. Marketing Department in 1979. In 1979, she won first place in the Painting, Sculpture, and Decorative Arts Departments at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts. In 1985, she received her phD diploma from the Painting Department with Prof. Neşet Günal and Prof. Neşe Erdok. In 1985, she married sculptor Bihrat Mavitan. In 1994, their daughter Tane was born.

From 1999 to 2002, she became an instructor for the Drawing course in the Stage Decoration and Costumes Department at Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts. In 2015, she became an instructor for Drawing and Painting Techniques courses in the Stage Decoration and Costume Design Department at Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts.

Since this date, she has trained many children and adults. She participated in numerous group exhibitions, art fairs, project works, symposiums, and art festivals. 

Nicole Melnicky, Artist

Nicole Melnicky is a distinguished contemporary artist based in Vancouver, BC, recognized for her exceptional contributions to the art world. She holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art, Media, and Design from OCAD University in Toronto, ON, and earned her BFA with a major in Fine Art, complemented by minors in Textile Design and Art History, from Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her artistic journey has been further enriched through prestigious residencies at renowned institutions such as Vermont Studio Center, Otis College of Art and Design, The Ou Gallery, Studio H Canada, LEÑA Artist Research & Residency, and AZULE. These experiences have not only shaped her creative perspective but have also solidified her status as an artist of notable merit. 

Her artwork has enriched exhibitions at notable venues, including The William Vale, TERAVARNA, and the Benjamin Lumb Art House in Vancouver, BC, and international platforms such as Art Vancouver International Art Fair and the Queer Art Festival. Her global presence extends to exhibitions in Los Angeles, CA, and London, UK, with participation in renowned events like The Other Art Fair, Las Laguna Gallery, TAG Gallery, Gallery 881, The Gallery George, Bentall Gallery, and Boomer Gallery. 

Nicole Melnicky’s art has garnered recognition on influential platforms like Artsy, Artnet, Saatchi Art, Singulart, Discover Abstract Artists, Jaamzin Creative Magazine, and Goss Magazine. Through her dynamic and innovative creations, Melnicky continues to captivate audiences and leave an indelible mark on the contemporary art scene. 

 

Mahur Muşkara, Artist

Mahur Muşkara was born in 1989-Izmir/Türkiye. She was interested in painting during her primary and secondary school years. She graduated from Eastern Mediterranean University Industrial Engineering in 2012, and Yeditepe University MBA in 2016. After her experiences in the private sector, she returned to painting, following her passion since childhood.  

She started her education on painting in 2019. What she started as a hobby turned into an adventure that excited her day by day. After 3 years of workshops, she opened her first personal painting exhibition in Cunda Ayvalık in June 2022 and 2nd personal exhibition, in Izmir Turkiye in September 2022. In the meantime she participated in many group exhibitions. She is reaching the art lovers from her personal instagram page which is called ‘@artbymahur’. 

Ayşegül Tamtürk, Artist

“Each of my work is a journey to connect my inner world to tell a story about human’s dilemma. To explore the meaning of those dilemmas, I love using various techniques like photography, digital art, mixed media, and 3D art. Finding solutions to creative problems is my ultimate fun, therefore I enjoy exploring variety of media. My favorite topics to question are immigration, social issues, and the existential crisis of women.”

Violette Zohar, Artist

Zohar is Canadian at heart, Brazilian by birth, and Kabbalistic in philosophy. She studied painting, theatre, classical piano and ballet. After completing her Chemical Engineering degree in Brazil, she apprenticed under Masters of visual art from a range of academic, classical and impressionist artists. Most recently, contemporary and mixed media artists are her favourite source of inspiration. Breaking from the social conventions of her history, she traveled the world to pursue different cultures and remote lands. Her diverse eclectic interests range from astronomy to antique Tibetan Thangkas, which she worked restoring them in Paris. Living in Vancouver, she studied at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and is a passionate art instructor.

Didem Cindik, Artist

“I work with 05 brush and %100 cotton paper. I use Turkish Tiles design and cini arts as an inspiration.I make the tiles look worn when I draw them.This way I tap into the history of my roots and the stillness of an object in the now. In 2003, I left my job in public relations and went back to drawing. In 2007, I started my Tattoo studio and in 2011 I worked on Turkish motifs in a workshop.Then I combined these motifs with tattoo patterns and applied a new style of my own in tattooing.In 2019,I moved to Vancouver. I live here with my son and I continue my life as a tattoo artist and doing watercolour painting here.”

Mehtap Kızılırmak, Artist

“Since 2005, I have been a professional photographer based in Türkiye, collaborating with esteemed national and international companies such as Peugeot, Renault, Jag Club, etc. In addition to numerous freelance projects, I’ve served as a staff photographer for renowned magazines such as Elle Türkiye, Peugeot eMag, Hello Türkiye, Moda Turkiye Interactive Fashion Zine, etc. Previously, I honed my skills as an assistant to respected photographers, gaining valuable in-studio and out-of-studio experience, and contributing collaboratively to projects. I’ve also worked as a photographer and cameraman for many well-known companies in Vancouver, Canada.”

Izabela Gereb, Artist

“I am a furniture designer by education but artist by heart … or was, and hopefully will be. As a teenager I spent most my summer in Galleries in Europe hoping to be, one day, as good as the Masters. Later my aspirations deflated. Wherever I went I had my sketchbook with me, but now I don’t plan to have one.”  

As experience related to art-scene I can list:  

– I run a Gallery in Old Montreal with a group of six artists. We had plenty of shows, but did not sell anything. Well, there were moving sculptures, which we could not sell these the sculptures were us.  

– I had a studio/gallery (Ironworks) on Alexander Street in Vancouver where I organized a number of exhibitions for others and myself.  

– I participated for years in Eastside Culture Crawl as an artist and as a volunteer.  

– I had a number of solo and group exhibitions as per attached list.  

– I was featured in BC, Quebec, Polish and Romanian television.   

– I sold over 300 paintings and over 800 pieces of unique furniture pieces I designed and made. For instance President Obama has a table I made, Diana Krall & Elvis Castello have my painting, many less known but art loving people have my work.  

Dilek Gümüş Aytekin, Artist

Dilek Gümüş AYTEKİN started her career as a visual arts teacher. She graduated from Ankara Gazi University, Department of Art Education in 1998. She worked in several schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education (MEB). He actively took part in educational and cultural festivals and also prepared and implemented various art projects. She opened her personal exhibition and workshop in 2005, She worked with both adult and youth groups in Izmir, Türkiye there participated in various exhibitions between 2005-2017.She moved to Canada in 2017. She continues her artwork in Vancouver. Participated in some organizations in Canada.

Zahide Tok Çalımlı, Artist

“I was born on August 26, 1972, in the village of Doğan in the Çelikhan district of Adıyaman, located in the southeast of Türkiye. I completed my primary and secondary education here. After graduating from Malatya Doğanşehir High School, I was accepted to Ankara Gazi University Faculty of Education, Department of Art Teaching in 1995. Later that year, I also got accepted to Çukurova University Faculty of Education, Department of Art Teaching in Adana and studied there for four years. I participated in various art exhibitions. In June 1999, I graduated as a teacher. On October 6, 1999, I started teaching in Gaziantep, where I worked for 24 years. I received certified Mosaic training at Gasmek and participated in an exhibition afterward. 

After the earthquake centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023, I came to Vancouver with my children to join my spouse. Here, I participated in the August festival organized by the African Association. My oil paintings of Joe Fortes were exhibited at the festival held at English Bay Beach, and I also did live painting there. Currently, I have been attending English classes at VCC College for about seven months.”

Nural Sümbültepe, Artist

Nural is a teacher in a school district. She has recently restarted painting to discover the maddening effect and extent of art on human soul. She believes people who feel lonely and isolated should either have animals as companions OR art and literature or both. 

Parisa Hoseinzade, Artist

Over twenty years of experience in artistic activities, including watercolor, acrylic, oil painting, marquetry, calligraphy, and decorative arts such as wood painting, antique work, gold leaf, bronze work, stone facade, tile facade, mosaic facade, and patina techniques.

  • Master’s degree in Art Research from the Islamic Azad University, Tehran North Branch from September 2016 to June 2020.
  • Associate degree in Iranian Painting from the Comprehensive University of Applied Sciences, Tehran from September 2011 to September 2013.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Law from the Islamic Azad University, Varamin Branch from September 2000 to February 2004.

Asuman Özakan, Artist

The focus of her artistic work lies on observing nature to express floral patterns that communicate and mimicking. 

She has been painting with music, collaborating with world musicians, and these have been presented in venues in Istanbul, and Vancouver
